Job Title: Anesthesia Technician

Department: Anesthesiology / Operating Theatre (OT)

Reports To: Chief Anesthesiologist / OT Manager / Nursing Director

Location: Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Job Summary

The Anesthesia Technician is responsible for assisting anesthesiologists in the preparation, maintenance, and operation of anesthesia equipment and monitoring devices before, during, and after surgical and diagnostic procedures. The role ensures the availability of safe, functional, and sterile anesthesia equipment while supporting high-quality patient care in compliance with Dubai Health Authority (DHA) regulations, hospital policies, infection control standards, and international best practices.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Support

  • Assist anesthesiologists during the administration of general, regional, and local anesthesia.
  • Prepare patients for anesthesia by assisting with positioning and applying monitoring devices.
  • Assist with airway management procedures, including preparing intubation equipment and airway devices.
  • Support anesthesiologists during emergency resuscitation and code blue situations.
  • Monitor patients during procedures under the direction of the anesthesiologist.
  • Provide technical assistance during surgical and diagnostic procedures requiring anesthesia or sedation.

Equipment Preparation & Maintenance

  • Prepare and check anesthesia machines before each procedure.
  • Inspect and test anesthesia delivery systems for proper functioning.
  • Ensure availability of anesthesia medications, gases, airway equipment, and emergency supplies.
  • Calibrate and maintain patient monitoring equipment.
  • Clean, disinfect, and prepare anesthesia equipment after each procedure.
  • Report equipment malfunctions and coordinate repairs with the Biomedical Engineering Department.
  • Maintain adequate stock levels of anesthesia supplies and consumables.

Infection Prevention & Safety

  • Follow infection prevention and control protocols at all times.
  • Ensure proper sterilization and handling of reusable equipment.
  • Dispose of sharps and medical waste according to hospital policies.
  • Perform daily safety checks of anesthesia machines and emergency carts.
  • Maintain a safe operating room environment.

Documentation

  • Record equipment checks and preventive maintenance logs.
  • Maintain inventory records for anesthesia supplies.
  • Document equipment usage and report technical issues.
  • Assist in maintaining patient-related records as directed by the anesthesiologist.

Collaboration

  • Work closely with anesthesiologists, surgeons, nurses, operating room staff, and biomedical engineers.
  • Coordinate with the Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) regarding sterile equipment.
  • Assist in patient transfers before and after procedures.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team activities to ensure efficient operating room workflow.

Quality & Compliance

  • Comply with DHA regulations, hospital policies, occupational health and safety standards, and infection control protocols.
  • Participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives and equipment audits.
  • Ensure compliance with patient safety goals and operating theatre standards.
  • Report incidents, equipment failures, and safety concerns promptly.

Professional Development

  • Participate in Continuing Medical Education (CME) and mandatory training programs.
  • Maintain competency in anesthesia equipment and emerging technologies.
  • Attend emergency response, fire safety, and infection control training sessions.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Anesthesia Technology or Anesthesia Technician Program from a recognized institution.
  • Valid DHA License or DHA Eligibility Letter as an Anesthesia Technician.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of experience as an Anesthesia Technician in a hospital or surgical setting.
  • Experience assisting in various surgical specialties is preferred.
  • Previous experience in a DHA-licensed healthcare facility is an advantage.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of anesthesia machines and patient monitoring equipment.
  • Knowledge of airway management equipment and emergency procedures.
  • Familiarity with anesthesia medications and medical gases.
  • Understanding of infection prevention and sterilization practices.
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic anesthesia equipment issues.
  • Competency in Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and hospital information systems.

  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure in a fast-paced operating theatre environment.

Working Conditions

  • Hospital operating theatres, procedure rooms, intensive care units, and emergency departments.
  • Rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends, public holidays, and on-call duties as required.
