Associate/ Full Professor- Environmental Epidemiology
 

Job Purpose:

The responsibilities of faculty members shall be an appropriate combination of:

a) Dissemination of knowledge through undergraduate and / or graduate teaching; and

b) Research, scholarly or other creative activities; and

c) University, community, and professional services

Key Roles & Responsibilities:

Teaching:

• Teach at undergraduate and graduate level in subject areas and on time schedules allocated by the Chair of Department

• Prepare teaching material including course outline, syllabus and lesson plans. Revise the subject matter on a regular basis as appropriate for that subject

• Contribute to the development, planning and implementation of a high quality curriculum

• Provide students with detailed syllabus, methods of instruction and evaluation in their courses

• Engage in the selection of textbooks and other teaching aids necessary to the instruction of courses

• Monitor students’ performance in their subject areas and provide remedial classes when necessary

• Set and mark exams, coursework, assignments, laboratory work, homework, and any other relevant activity

• Use up-to-date instructional technology and ensure the delivery is clear and consistent

• Supervise students’ research and practical work and of their theses preparation, as well as participate in evaluation of their theses

• Participate in professional peer reviews

• Supervise teaching internships

• Develop and improve their scholarly competence and effectiveness as teachers within their area of expertise

• Carry out research and produce publications, or other research outputs, in line with personal objectives agreed in the review process

• Engage in scholarly or creative activities in their area of expertise and makes results available for critical peer review

• Deliver papers at professional association meetings, seminars and conferences

• Identify and successfully bid for external funding and grants

• Actively raise the Department and Faculty’s profile, internally and externally

• Participate in departmental and faculty seminars aimed at sharing research outcomes and building interdisciplinary collaboration within and outside the department

• Collaborate with colleagues, both within and outside the University, in conducting and managing research and consultancy activities

Academic Service:

• Play an active role in departmental, or University-wide working groups or committees as requested

• Contribute to student recruitment, retention and placement efforts

• Foster service by contributing to the community at large in participatory, developmental or advisory capacity

• Support and participate in student organization activities

• Adhere to the University’s information security and confidentiality policies and procedures, and report breaches or other security risks accordingly

• Coordinate with other departments to facilitate the accomplishment of tasks and responsibilities, as and when needed• Contribute to the academic community through peer review, editorial roles, and professional organizations.

• Engage in outreach, collaboration, and public engagement activities.

• Demonstrate a strong commitment and practice to maintaining a safe and healthy work environment

• Perform any other tasks assigned by the Line Manager

Qualifications & Experience

  • PhD or equivalent terminal degree, in Environmental Epidemiology, Epidemiology, Public Health or closely related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Candidates with interdisciplinary training integrating environmental exposures, population health and quantitative epidemiology are strongly preferred.

Required Experience

A minimum of 8 years of academic or research experience relevant to environmental health, out of which at least 5 years should be at the level of Assistant Professor or equivalent research leadership role.

Applicants should demonstrate:

Experience conducting research relevant to environmental health challenges in arid, urban, or rapidly developing regions, particularly the Middle East or Gulf region, is an advantage.

A strong record of peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals in environmental epidemiology, environmental health or population health

Demonstrated expertise in environmental exposure assessment including but not limited to:

Air pollution

Climate change and health

Built environment and urban health

Chemical and occupational exposures

Environmental determinants of chronic and infectious diseases

Experience in conducting population-based epidemiological studies, including cohort, cross-sectional or case-control designs

Strong proficiency in advanced statistical and epidemiological methods including:

Longitudinal data analysis

Spatial epidemiology

Time-series analysis

Causal inference methods

Demonstrated ability to secure competitive external research funding from national or international agencies

Experience supervising graduate students (MPH and/or PhD) and mentoring early-career researchers.

Experience leading or collaborating on multidisciplinary research projects involving environmental science, climate science, epidemiology or public health

Experience working with large datasets, environmental monitoring data, GIS platforms or remote sensing data is highly desirable
