Consultant – PICU

Job Description

The PICU Consultant is responsible for providing specialized, evidence-based critical care to pediatric patients with life-threatening illnesses and conditions. The role includes managing admissions to the PICU, leading multidisciplinary teams, performing advanced clinical interventions, and ensuring compliance with Abu Dhabi Department of Health (DOH) and international standards of pediatric intensive care.

Responsibilities

Clinical Care

Provide expert diagnosis, treatment, and management of critically ill infants, children, and adolescents.

Perform advanced resuscitation, airway management, and life-support interventions.

Oversee ventilatory management, hemodynamic monitoring, and other intensive care procedures.

Lead daily multidisciplinary ward rounds, ensuring comprehensive patient management.

Ensure safe transition of patients between PICU and other departments.

Leadership & Teaching

Supervise and mentor PICU medical staff, residents, and nursing teams.

Provide training on pediatric critical care protocols, emergency procedures, and best practices.

Participate in teaching activities, clinical workshops, and CME programs.

Quality & Safety

Ensure compliance with DOH regulations, hospital policies, and Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation standards.

Participate in morbidity and mortality reviews, audits, and quality improvement initiatives.

Promote infection control, patient safety, and ethical clinical practice.

Collaboration

Work closely with pediatricians, subspecialists (e.g., cardiology, neurology, surgery), and allied health professionals.

Maintain effective communication with patients’ families, providing clear updates and compassionate support.

Participate in hospital committees and strategic planning related to pediatric critical care services.

Qualifications

Medical Degree (MBBS/MD or equivalent) from a recognized institution.

Completed specialty training in Pediatrics and sub-specialization/fellowship in Pediatric Intensive Care Medicine (CCT, FRCPCH, American Board, Arab Board, or equivalent).

Valid DOH (Department of Health Abu Dhabi) Consultant license or eligibility.

Minimum 8–10 years of post-specialization experience in pediatrics, including at least 3–5 years in PICU at a consultant level.

Expertise in advanced life support, invasive/non-invasive ventilation, and pediatric resuscitation.

Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.

Fluency in English (Arabic is an advantage).
