To fulfil the roles of teacher and tutor as described in the generic job description.
Head of Physical Education, Swimming, Sport & ECA
The Head of Department is responsible for making clear and effective decisions about: planning, implementing and evaluating the curriculum and extracurricular; leading and managing teaching and non-teaching staff; and organising department resources. To have overall responsibility forthe standard of learners’ work, outcomes and behaviour in the department.
Department Planning
In consultation with the Principal:
- To construct a Development and Improvement Plan, based on the School Development and Improvement Plan, defining short, medium and long term goals of the department area;
- To oversee the implementation and evaluation of the Development and Improvement Plan; and
- To prepare the department for internal and external review and evaluation and the KHDA inspection.
Curriculum
- To construct and oversee schemes of work in Physical Education, Swimming, Sport & ECA, which satisfy statutory requirements and are compatible with the school’s aims, policies, and ethos.
- In consultation with members of the department and Curriculum Manager/HoS, to evaluate the schemes of work and modify them in the light of new attitudes and approaches, changed examination syllabi, or altered school or national policies.
- To ensure that a high quality extra-curricular sport curriculum meets the needs of learners of all abilities.
- To ensure that schemes of work are differentiated to meet the needs of individual learners.
- To liaise with the SENCO over learners with special educational needs.
- To ensure that schemes of work show continuity and progression in:
- Curriculum objectives and content.
- The improvement of cross curricular skills; and
- Teaching and learning strategies
- To ensure that schemes of work for Physical Education, Swimming, Sport & ECA build on skills, attitudes, knowledge and concepts developed in the EYFS, primary school and progress through to post-16.
- In consultation with the Curriculum Manager/ HoS, to assist in the improvement of cross curricular themes, skills and dimensions.
- To promote teaching and learning strategies within the department that stimulate learner interest and involvement in learning and meet the needs of individual learners, drawing on good practice in different areas of the faculty.
- Acquire a range of appropriate educational resources.
- To assist the Librarian in the acquisition of stock which supports the curriculum.
- To develop and monitor assessment procedures compatible with the school policy and statutory requirements. • To evaluate the suitability of courses offered by the different examination boards and choose those which meet the needs and aspirations of learners.
- To ensure the arrangement of educational visits which aim to support curriculum objectives.
- To contribute as necessary to the planning of the school timetable.
- To maintain constant awareness of improvements in Physical Education, Swimming, Sport & ECA and bring these to the attention of the Principal.
- To liaise with other Heads of Department and over whole school curriculum planning.
- To liaise with the SLT in preparing the school calendar.
Learners
- To establish and maintain high levels of expectations in learners.
- To ensure that the school guidelines on behaviour, presentation of work and completion of homework are implemented.
- To establish procedures for the assessment and recording of learner progress in line with school and national policy.
- To ensure that learner records are passed on from year to year.
- To organise teaching groups into sets where appropriate.
- To ensure that learners and their parents are provided with information and guidance about courses offered by the department at Key Stage 1, Key Stage 3, Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5.
- To supervise the completion of reports and Individual Action Plans.
- To ensure liaison with the pastoral and learning support staff over individual learner needs, especially during times of stress.
- To monitor attendance and punctuality and ensure that learners use their organisers.
- To assist in the discipline and congratulation of individual learners.
Management of Staff
The Head of PE Department should demonstrate the ability to lead, motivate and get the best out of others. They should engender a common sense of purpose, shared vision and sense of mission within the department.
- To assist with recruitment and appointment.
- To assist in the preparation of job descriptions and delegate appropriate responsibilities and duties to members of the departments.
- To make arrangements for the induction of newly appointed teachers.
- To provide a full programme of guidance and support for newly qualified teachers, those returning to teaching and those taking part in other training programmes.
- To prepare reports on newly qualified teachers.
- To conduct the appraisal process.
- To identify strengths and areas for improvement of staff and take appropriate actions to encourage high morale.
- To bring to the attention of the SLT line manager areas of concern in the professional capability of teaching and non-teaching staff.
- To implement school procedures for the monitoring and evaluation of the work of teachers in the Physical Education, Swimming, Sport & ECA department.
- To ensure that lesson plans are prepared, schemes of work are followed, learner work is assessed, and the credit system is used by staff.
- To establish structures for departmental consultation, communication and evaluation.
- To hold effective departmental meetings and ensure that minutes are distributed to members of the departments, the Principal and SLT line manager.
- To ensure that the departments are represented at cross-curricular group meetings.
- To organise work for absent staff, ensuring that suitable work is set and resourced.
- To assist in the deployment of support teaching staff.
- To meet with the representative on the Senior Leadership Team and exchange information.
- To have a thorough, professional knowledge of departmental staff, to take interest in their wellbeing and to offer guidance as appropriate.
Teaching Staff
- To assist, when requested, with recruitment and appointment of non-teaching staff.
- To implement an induction programme for new non-teaching staff.
- To deploy staff within the department and to prepare job descriptions.
- To monitor and evaluate the work of the non-teaching staff.
Resources and Accomodation
- To ensure that resources within the Physical Education, Swimming, Sport & ECA department are relevant to curriculum and extracurricular needs and are well maintained.
- To assist with an annual departmental budget for the Operations Manager and ensure appropriate financial records are maintained.
- To ensure the purchase, maintenance and appropriate allocation of resources.
- To ensure that the stock records are accurately maintained.
- To outline standards for proper care of the accommodation, furniture and equipment and to demonstrate the economic, efficient and effective use of resources.
- To ensure that the learning environment is enhanced and that:
- Classrooms/ Sports areas etc. are left tidy and clean; and
- Learner work is regularly displayed within and outside the classroom.
- To liaise with the Health and Safety representative in ensuring that learners and teachers work in a safe and healthy environment.
- To liaise with the Business Manager regarding all issues related to finance.
Examinations
- To ensure liaison with the Examinations Officer over entry procedures.
- To ensure that all necessary coursework has been forwarded to the exam boards.
- To liaise with and arrange the visit of external moderators.
- To monitor examination results within the faculty and prepare a report for the Principal.
- To prepare internal examination question papers in consultation with other members of the faculty.
- To organise teacher assessments of learner work in the National Curriculum.
The Community
- To ensure effective dialogue with parents in accordance with school policies.
- To assist in the induction of learners at all levels of entry into the school.
- To ensure that learners receive advice on post-16 courses.
- To contribute to reports to Governors when required.
- To maintain a dialogue with the support services and advisory staff.
- To promote those links with the local community which enhance curriculum provision.
Additional Responsibilities as Head of Department
- To monitor and evaluate the work of staff to advise on performance appraisals.
- To contribute to strategic whole school planning, monitoring and evaluation.
General
- To participate in the performance and development review process, taking personal responsibility for identification of learning, development and training opportunities in discussion with line manager.
- To comply with individual responsibilities in accordance with the role, for health and safety in the workplace.

- Rebranding and professionalising the identity of sport at TSS.
- Developing external partnerships and sponsorships to generate income and broaden learner opportunities.
Events
- School Sports Day – EYFS/Primary/Secondary – To deliver sports days for each phase of the school.
- BSME – To lead and participate in the BSME tournaments by organising learner transport and extra-curricular clubs to support skill development for those sports/ activities.
- Dubai 30×30 – To organise a programme that supports Dubai 30×30’s initiatives across the UAE to maintain 30 minutes of exercise for 30 days.
- Sports Teams – To lead and delegate the organisation of school sports teams and their participation in inter school fixtures and competitions including EISA and DASSA league participation, UAE School Games and BSME Games, as well as serving on the EISSA Board.
- Leading the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award programme.
- Managing the full school House system and embedding it into the wider school culture. Lead and coordinate the School House System by developing a strategic vision for house events, promoting school-wide participation, and fostering a strong sense of community and school spirit.
- Collaborate across departments and phases to organise inter-house competitions, track points and achievements, and ensure consistency and fairness in house-related activities and policies.
