Job Description

Aldar Education is seeking an outstanding Head of Physical Education to join Muna British Academy in Abu Dhabi, commencing in the 2026–2027 academic year.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic direction and development of the department

  • Lead the strategic direction of the PE department, ensuring alignment with the school’s vision, values and improvement priorities.
  • Develop, implement and regularly review departmental policies and practices to ensure high standards of teaching, learning and student achievement.
  • Produce and monitor short, medium and long-term development plans for the department, using data and self-evaluation to drive improvement.
  • Analyse attainment and participation data to identify trends, underachievement and gaps between groups; implement targeted interventions to support all learners.
  • Use internal and external data, research and inspection frameworks to inform curriculum design, teaching approaches and departmental targets.
  • Ensure schemes of work are coherent, progressive and inclusive across all key stages, including appropriate provision for SEND, EAL and high-attaining students.
  • Lead on whole-school initiatives relating to physical wellbeing, sport and healthy lifestyles.
  • Ensure the department is ready for GCSE/BTEC examinations for academic year 2027/28

Teaching and learning

  • Ensure high-quality teaching and learning across the department through coaching, monitoring and professional development.
  • Establish clear expectations for teaching, learning, behaviour and assessment within PE.
  • Ensure curriculum coverage, continuity and progression across all year groups and examination courses.
  • Lead the development of assessment, recording and reporting systems that accurately track student progress and inform teaching.
  • Monitor the quality of teaching through lesson observations, learning walks, work scrutiny and student voice.
  • Support staff to implement effective differentiation and inclusive practice.
  • Ensure strong outcomes in examination PE courses and support intervention and revision programmes where required.
  • Promote a broad and inclusive extracurricular sports programme that supports participation, performance and student leadership.

Leading and managing staff

  • Line manage and performance manage members of the PE team in line with school policy.
  • Build a collaborative and high-performing team culture with clear expectations, accountability and professional support.
  • Lead regular department meetings focused on student outcomes, teaching quality and curriculum development.
  • Identify professional development needs and support staff through coaching and CPD opportunities.
  • Support recruitment, induction and development of new staff within the department.

Managing resources

  • Manage departmental budgets effectively to ensure best value and impact on student outcomes.
  • Oversee the organisation, maintenance and safe use of sports facilities and equipment.
  • Ensure the learning environment is safe, inclusive and stimulating, adhering to all health and safety requirements and risk assessment procedures.
  • Plan and manage fixtures, competitions, trips and sporting events in line with school policies.

Other Duties And Responsibilities

  • Lead and promote extracurricular sport, fixtures and enrichment opportunities.
  • Contribute to whole-school events, house competitions and community sport initiatives.
  • Support the school’s wellbeing agenda and promote active lifestyles across the school community.
  • Contribute to whole-school duties such as supervision, cover and examination invigilation as required.
  • Undertake any additional duties as directed by the Principal.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications: A Bachelor’s Degree in a related subject with PGCE or equivalent teaching qualification.

Minimum Experience: A minimum of 2 years of experience working in a similar role.

  • Mandatory experience working in an international school.
  • Experience working with students whom English is not their first language (EAL) students.
