NICU Specialist
Description
The NICU specialist plans and carries out medical care program for infants. Examines patients to determine presence of disease and to establish preventive health practices. Determines nature and extent of disease or injury, prescribes and administers medications and immunizations, and performs variety of medical duties. He/she renders appropriate care for neonates in the NICU and inpatient ward and in those cases where a referral to another tertiary care center is more appropriate, shall contact the consultant and arrange referral/transfer to these centers.
Specific Duties:
NICU:
- Caring for newborns admitted to the NICU and being involved in training the nursing staff; as needed.
- Should be well versed in the clinical problems encountered by newborns of all gestational ages starting at 22 weeks gestation including management of metabolic disorders and assessment of dysmorphic features and syndromes.
- Should also be familiar with various modes of invasive and non-invasive respiratory support and all routine procedures in the NICU including but not limited to insertion of UVC, UAC, percutaneous line, peripheral arterial line, chest drain etc.
- Be involved in teaching programs. Shall maintain a high standard in infection control in NICU and help in developing this unit Labor & Delivery Ward:
- Attends all high risk deliveries including Preterm deliveries, MSAF, Breech and mom’s with abnormal CTG and C-sections and be able to provide neonatal resuscitation independently and as team leader., etc General Duties:
- To be personally accountable for professional and ethical actions and practices within a legal and ethical framework that adheres to Kanad Hospital’s requirements in conjunction with DOH and JCI guidelines and standards.
2. To maintain confidentiality, while communicating patient information, in such a way that preserves the dignity and privacy of the patient and the patient’s family and carers.
3. To work in a non-judgmental anti-discriminatory way, with regard to the cultural and religious beliefs of individuals and groups.
4. To ensure that prior to any course of action involving individuals/groups, their informed consent or other valid authority has been obtained.
5. To ensure that record-keeping and patient documentation are managed through the creation and maintenance of concise, contemporaneous computerized records and that all care is recorded accurately and in a timely fashion.
6. To interpret and explain complex facts in relation to a patient’s condition, taking appropriate action and giving advice in a professional manner to team members, and when appropriate to family and other carers, in such a way that protects and preserves the patient’s dignity.
7. To be responsible for appropriate referrals, ongoing support for the patient, family/carer and the co-ordination of other services.
8. To assess, tolerate and manage risk and deal with uncertainty.
9. To prescribe in accordance with regulations and with the post holder’s training and registration.
10. To provide telephone consultations as required.
11. To demonstrate critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills in clinical decision-making.
12. To ensure the accurate completion of all necessary documentation associated with health care and practice administration according to ICD and E/M guidelines.
13. To be able to work with people from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds, and people with disabilities and learning difficulties, and to be able to communicate with them (and, when necessary, their carers) appropriately to facilitate their care and understanding of their care within the service
14. To manage one’s own clinical responsibilities and to act as source of information to other clinical staff.
15. To record in the medical record why investigations are being undertaken. To analyze the results and record in the medical record the actions required.
16. To liaise effectively with all other disciplines and to forge effective links with primary and secondary care to ensure effective communication.
17. To undertake professional development and participate in Kanad Hospital’s CME program.
18. To attend department and other scheduled meetings.
19. Assist in the orientation of new staff.
20. Participate in the teaching and supervision of medical students as needed.
21. Be available for house calls when requested
Qualification
Education: Board certified or MD in pediatric with fellowship in Neonatology preferred
Fellow in Neonatology preferred
License – DOH/DHA licensed or DOH passer or DOH exam exempted preferred
Experience
Experience: Experience of 3 years after MD
Skills required: ETT intubation of extreme low birth weight
