Responsibilities
Main Duties:
- Support for Students and Families: Provide non therapeutic support to students facing various challenges, liaising between the school, students’ and families, and community external providers.
- Interdisciplinary Team Collaboration: Collaborate as part of the wider Pastoral Services Team in school to assess students needs, identify causes and impacts, and provide necessary support services within the school environment
- Emotional and Behavioural Support: Work with various stakeholders, including parents and teachers, to address, personal, social, mental, and emotional health needs. The goal is to enhance students’ competencies and facilitate their success through the school educational journey
Specific Duties:
- Assessment and Case Management: Conduct comprehensive interviews and assessments to understand individuals’ and families’ situations, often collaborating with other professionals.
- Resource Navigation and Advocacy: Connecting clients with appropriate community resources (housing, benefits, healthcare, legal aid). This involves advocating for clients’ needs.
- Supply resources and guidance: prepare assemblies focussing on specific needs of students and the wider school community
- Support and Empowerment: Providing information, training/CPD, support, and guidance to individuals and families.
- Collaboration and Referral: Liaising with and making referrals to other agencies (healthcare providers, schools, legal services). Participating in multidisciplinary teams.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintaining accurate records, preparing reports, and potentially giving evidence in court.
- Professional Development: Participating in ongoing training, supervision, and team meetings.
GROUP COUNSELLING:
- Identifies areas that would be appropriate for intervention in the form of group counselling and regularly forms and leads appropriate groups.
- Utilizes both large (classroom) groups and small groups to make appropriate academic and behavioural interventions.
PERSONAL COUNSELLING:
- Works with individual students and groups of students in regards to appropriate social development issues.
- Maintains an awareness of cultural influences regarding social development of adolescents.
- Monitors students who may be at risk in regards to social issues and makes appropriate referrals for interventions outside of school in consultation with parents.
Qualifications
Minimum Experience
- Minimum of 1 year experience in school counselling or other counselling experience required
Essential Job Specific Knowledge & Skills
- Bachelor of Science/Education in Social Work
- Appropriate license to carry out student counselling
- Strong interpersonal skills with both students and parents
- Demonstrable organisational skills
- Strong desire to help others and should be able to inspire respect, trust, and confidence
- Must possess high emotional and physical energy to handle the array of problems addressed.
