Job Description
Assists with all anaesthetic procedures, maintains all related anaesthetic equipment and keeps documentation to support this.
Responsibilities
- Stocks anaesthesia supplies and drugs in all operating and delivery suites.
- Maintains adequate supplies of medical oxygen, nitrous oxide, and air.
- Consults operating room schedule to determine equipment needs for special procedures and prepares the operating room accordingly.
- Maintains, calibrates, and troubleshoots anaesthesia department equipment according to instructions and protocols of equipment manuals.
- Cleans and disinfects anaesthesia equipment after use.
- Assists with sterile procedures, including Swan-Ganz placements, blood transfusions, and administration of spinal, epidural, and other pain blockers.
- Collaborates with a multi-disciplinary team to provide patient care.
- Participates in staff meetings and unit committees/projects.
- Participates in developing and achieving unit goals.
- Performs duties of supervisor if required.
- Participates in the orientation of new staff.
- Anticipates problems, and emergencies and takes appropriate actions
- Delegates specific duties/nursing care to other team members based on patient needs and staff qualifications.
- Maintains clinical and professional competency based on the latest research and established standards of practice.
- Participates in Inventory/lost charge counts.
- Follows the authority, discusses problems appropriately and chain of command.
- Accepts supervision and benefits from constructive criticism.
- Executes the daily, weekly and monthly maintenance of all anaesthesia-related equipment.
- Maintains a safe environment for patients.
- Identifies any special needs relating to anaesthesia and operating lists each day.
- Provides effective assistance to anaesthetists per hospital policies and procedures.
- Maintains accurate and thorough documentation following established standards.
- Assesses educational needs and provides education to patients/families.
- Assists in teaching/guiding new anaesthetic technicians/nurses.
- Performs Infection Control activities including the observation of the Surgical Team activities to maintain an aseptic technique.
- Maintains control and documentation of Narcotics.
- Uses supplies in economical manner.
- Performs “on-call” duties.
- Performs Additional duties as required.
Qualifications
- Diploma in Anesthesia Technology or
- Anesthesia Technician Program Certificate
- Basic Cardiac Life Support Certificate
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certificate preferred
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience as an Anesthesia Technician in a private hospital.
- Knowledgeable of policies and procedures of the Operating Room.
- Skills in problem-solving/critical thinking ensuring effective functioning of unit routine.
