GEMS Wellington Academy – Al Khail is seeking to appoint an exceptional and experienced leader to join the Senior Leadership Team as Assistant Head (Sixth Form) from August 2026. The successful candidate will provide strategic and operational leadership of the Sixth Form (Years 12–13), driving outstanding academic outcomes, exceptional pastoral care and ensuring pupils are fully prepared for their chosen pathways beyond school.
Job Purpose:
As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Assistant Head (Sixth Form) is responsible for the strategic development, academic progress, pastoral wellbeing and university preparation of all Sixth Form pupils. Working closely with the Deputy Head (Academic) and wider SLT, the postholder will lead a high-performing Sixth Form culture that promotes aspiration, scholarship, independence and excellence.
- Develop and communicate a clear vision and strategic direction for the Sixth Form in line with the School Development Plan.
- Lead the operational and strategic management of the Sixth Form, ensuring it is recognised as a centre of excellence within the UAE.
- Create and implement an annual Sixth Form Development Plan.
- Line manage the Sixth Form Team, including Heads of Year 12 and 13 and the Head of Careers.
- Manage the Sixth Form budget and oversee effective resource allocation.
- Contribute to whole-school leadership, including recruitment, strategic planning and deputising where required.
- Lead the monitoring, tracking and analysis of Sixth Form academic performance to secure exceptional outcomes in public examinations.
- Oversee termly assessment analysis and implement targeted interventions to maximise attainment.
- Work with SLT and Heads of Department to ensure high-quality teaching and curriculum provision at Key Stage 5.
- Lead the annual analysis of examination results and university destinations.
- Foster a culture of academic enquiry, scholarship and intellectual ambition.
- Lead the pastoral development and wellbeing of all Sixth Form pupils.
- Promote high expectations in behaviour, attendance, dress and attitudes to learning.
- Oversee disciplinary matters and recognise student achievement.
- Ensure effective induction, transition and tutor provision across Years 12 and 13.
- Provide opportunities for pupil voice and leadership, including Prefect selection.
- Oversee the Sixth Form environment and enrichment provision to create a personalised and aspirational student journey.
- Lead and oversee the University Preparation Programme from Year 6 to Year 13, with a strong focus on Sixth Form outcomes.
- Manage all aspects of university applications (UK, USA, UAE and international), including UCAS, references, predicted grades and personal statements.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with universities and external partners.
- Coordinate careers guidance, university visits, events and parent engagement opportunities.
- Track and analyse leavers’ destinations and alumni engagement.
- Lead Sixth Form recruitment and retention strategies, including taster days, options evenings and parent workshops.
- Support the Sixth Form admissions process, including interviews and academic transition from Year 11 to Year 12.
- Promote the Sixth Form through marketing initiatives and external communications.
- Work in line with statutory safeguarding guidance and GEMS safeguarding policies.
- Ensure effective systems for record keeping, communication and compliance.
- Operate within regulatory frameworks including KHDA and BSO standards.
Skills
- Proven strategic and operational leadership experience.
- Strong track record of securing excellent academic outcomes at Key Stage 5.
- Excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills.
- Deep understanding of British curriculum frameworks and inspection standards (KHDA, BSO).
- Recognised teaching qualification (PGCE or equivalent).
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field; Master’s degree or NPQ desirable.
