General Practitioner (Emergency Room) 

Job Description

The General Practitioner (Emergency Room) is responsible for providing immediate assessment, diagnosis, stabilization, and treatment of patients presenting with acute illnesses, injuries, and medical emergencies. The GP-ER delivers high-quality, evidence-based emergency care while ensuring compliance with Dubai Health Authority (DHA) regulations, hospital policies, and international clinical standards. The role requires the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Perform rapid assessment, triage, diagnosis, and treatment of patients presenting to the Emergency Department.
  • Manage a wide range of medical, surgical, pediatric, and minor trauma emergencies.
  • Stabilize critically ill or injured patients prior to referral or admission.
  • Perform comprehensive physical examinations and obtain detailed medical histories.
  • Develop and implement appropriate treatment plans based on clinical findings.
  • Initiate emergency interventions according to established clinical protocols.
  • Prescribe medications and monitor patient response to treatment.
  • Decide on patient discharge, admission, transfer, or referral based on clinical assessment.
  • Provide follow-up instructions and patient education upon discharge.

Emergency Procedures

  • Perform Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) interventions.
  • Manage airway emergencies, including oxygen therapy and basic airway management.
  • Perform wound assessment, suturing, and dressing.
  • Treat fractures, sprains, and minor orthopedic injuries.
  • Perform incision and drainage of minor abscesses where appropriate.
  • Interpret Electrocardiograms (ECG).
  • Initiate management of cardiac emergencies, stroke, sepsis, asthma, anaphylaxis, and other acute conditions.
  • Perform venipuncture, intravenous cannulation, and arterial blood gas sampling.
  • Assist in resuscitation and emergency procedures as required.

Diagnostic Responsibilities

  • Order and interpret laboratory investigations and diagnostic imaging.
  • Interpret ECGs, X-rays, and other diagnostic reports relevant to emergency care.
  • Identify patients requiring specialist consultation or hospital admission.
  • Ensure timely referral to appropriate specialties.

Patient Care

  • Provide compassionate, patient-centered emergency medical care.
  • Educate patients and families regarding diagnosis, treatment plans, medications, and discharge instructions.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and informed consent.
  • Ensure continuity of care through accurate handover and referrals.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration

  • Work closely with Emergency Consultants, Specialists, Nurses, Radiology, Laboratory, Pharmacy, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in emergency response teams and code blue activations.
  • Communicate effectively during patient handovers and multidisciplinary discussions.

Quality & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate, complete, and timely electronic medical records (EMR).
  • Adhere to DHA regulations, hospital policies, infection prevention, and patient safety standards.
  • Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, and departmental meetings.
  • Report clinical incidents and adverse events according to hospital policies.
  • Ensure compliance with clinical governance and ethical standards.

Professional Development

  • Participate in Continuing Medical Education (CME) activities.
  • Maintain valid professional licensure and mandatory certifications.
  • Attend emergency medicine training sessions and simulation exercises.
  • Keep up to date with current emergency medicine guidelines and best practices.

Qualifications

  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
  • Valid DHA License or DHA Eligibility Letter as a General Practitioner.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certifications are preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum 2–3 years of post-internship clinical experience, preferably in an Emergency Department, Urgent Care, or Acute Care setting.
  • Experience in managing emergency and trauma cases is preferred.
  • Previous experience in a DHA-licensed healthcare facility is an advantage.

Working Conditions

  • Hospital Emergency Department with rotating shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and public holidays.
