About Company
At Marriott International, innovation drives everything we do – from serving our guests and supporting our associates to growing our global business. What started in 1927 as a small nine-seat A&W Root Beer stand in Washington, D.C., has grown into one of the world’s leading hospitality companies. Our success is guided by five core values: put people first, pursue excellence, embrace change, act with integrity, and serve our world.
Our Early Beginnings (1927–1956)
Marriott began as an A&W Root Beer franchise, founded by J. Willard and Alice Sheets Marriott. The business grew from serving root beer to offering full meals at “The Hot Shoppes,” laying the foundation for future ventures.
Entering the Hotel Business (1957–1976)
Marriott expanded into lodging with the Twin Bridges Motor Hotel in Arlington, Virginia. Bill Marriott, Jr., son of the founders, took charge of hotel operations, guiding Marriott into the hospitality industry.
Growth and Milestones (1977–1988)
The company celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1977 and broke ground for a new headquarters, marking a major step in Marriott’s global expansion.
Global Expansion (1989–2004)
In 1989, the Warsaw Marriott opened as the company’s 500th hotel. It was the first western-managed hotel in Eastern Europe and the tallest in Warsaw, symbolizing Marriott’s growing international presence.
Lifestyle and Luxury Innovation (2005–2015)
Marriott partnered with hotelier Ian Schrager to launch EDITION Hotels, a luxury boutique brand. The first property opened in Waikiki, Hawaii, in 2010, highlighting Marriott’s focus on innovative and personalized guest experiences.
Becoming the World’s Largest Hotel Company (2016–Present)
In 2016, Marriott acquired Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, becoming the world’s largest hotel company. This milestone strengthened Marriott’s global footprint and expanded its portfolio of iconic brands, continuing a legacy of excellence and innovation celebrated worldwide.
